The Number 1 question that I keep getting asked is, "What is a Virtual Assistant?"
For a quick response I'll share good old Wikipedia's explanation...
"A virtual assistant is generally self-employed and provides professional administrative, technical, or creative assistance to clients remotely from a home office. Because virtual assistants are independent contractors rather than employees, clients are not responsible for any employee-related taxes, insurance or benefits, except in the context that those indirect expenses are included in the VA's fees. Clients also avoid the logistical problem of providing extra office space, equipment or supplies. Clients pay for 100% productive work, and can work with Virtual Assistants, individually, or in multi-VA firms to meet their exact needs. Virtual Assistants usually work for other small businesses, but can also support busy executives." (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_assistant_(occupation))
Basically, the title Virtual Assistant is an umbrella term that has many freelance subheadings underneath it. Some of the more common VA niches are:
1. General Administrative duties: email management, phone answering, data input, bookkeeping, payroll, etc...
2. Social Media Management: Twitter/Instagram/Pinterest/Facebook/LinkedIn - This is a HUGE category that requires several blog posts to even scratch the surface. In a broad sense think of setting up these accounts, maintaining them on a daily basis, and digging deep in the marketing world of these accounts to grow your business EXPONENTIALLY!
3. Real Estate Virtual Assistant: The amount of details that go into listing and/or purchasing a home are endless. Add to this the task of staying current on market trends, managing your advertising and bringing in new leads....there just are not enough hours in the day to do it all. And honestly you could apply this title to any position where you serve as the right hand man(or woman) for a busy professional.
4. Website Designer: So many entrepreneurs do not have the time or the know how to create their own website and effectively the technical world of HTML, Header Codes, Meta Tags, SEO, and every other acronym under the sun. Having a website is crucial to business growth, so it only makes sense to contract this task out to a knowledgeable individual.
To wrap it all up, a Virtual Assistant is someone who works remotely for another business professional. And in the current world of all things digital and web based, this is a perfect fit for many!
